Zetes 2, Çatalağzı, Turkey

Çatalağzı in the province of Zonguldag may be a traditional coal mining area, but since the 2x615 MW Zetes II went into operation in 2010, serious additional impacts have been felt by local people.

Around 20 percent of children are born with underdeveloped lungs, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) widespread, and cancer rates are steadily increasing. Concerns are also being raised about the plant contributing to heating of the sea water and soil in the area, with largely unknown impacts on biodiversity.
